There’s nothing like being in a strange kitchen with an unfamiliar oven in someone else’s house
to focus the mind of a cook like Sticky Betty. Especially when ingredients are in short supply but
all you need for this tasty dessert are bread, eggs, milk and sugar. If, like Sticky Betty, you find a
half a bag of dried cranberries in the back of a cupboard, you’re away!
Ingredients
4 or 5 slices of buttered bread cut into small squares; 3 eggs; 250ml of milk; 2 tablespoons of
sugar; a handful of dried cranberries (optional – you can use any dried fruit).
Method
1 Arrange the bread and butter in an oven proof dish and scatter with dried cranberries.
2 Beat the eggs and sugar together in a bowl.
3 Heat the milk and almost at the boil then pour into the eggs, beating all the time.
4 Pour the egg and milk mixture over the bread. Put the dish on an oven tray to catch any spills
and bake until set. About 30 mins at 180°C.
5 Serve hot or cold. Sticky Betty showed off by adding strawberries and blueberries and serving
with ice cream.
