Lewistown TRA House

Baobab Bach uses the garden area behind the community hub in Lewistown, where the local pantry is based. The space currently includes several small raised beds, which have previously been used to grow herbs and a small amount of vegetables.

The vision for the Lewistown Growing Area is to transform the garden into a space inspired by the area’s mining heritage. Baobab Bach is exploring the idea of creating a late 18th century or early 19th century miner’s garden, using traditional design ideas and heritage plant varieties that reflect what may once have been grown locally.

This project is still in its early stages, with research underway into the types of fruit, vegetables, herbs and plants that would have been used in gardens of that time. Baobab Bach would like the local community to be part of shaping the project, sharing ideas, memories and local knowledge along the way.

The aim is to create a garden that feels rooted in Lewistown’s history, while also offering a useful, welcoming and enjoyable space for people today. As the garden develops, it will become a place where people can learn about growing, local heritage, food and community.
